What is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?

Preparing your mouth before placing a prosthesis is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.

Some patients need minor oral surgical procedures before receiving a complete or partial denture so they experience a high level of comfort. A denture will be positioned on the bone ridge so it is important that the bone is the proper size and shape. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be uneven or jagged. The bone might even need to be smoothed or reshaped to ensure the best fit of a denture. Excess bone may need to be removed before the denture is inserted.
One or more of these procedures may be needed in order to prepare your mouth for a denture:

  • Bone reshaping and smoothing
  • Removing excess bone
  • Reducing bone ridge size
  • Removing excess gum tissue
  • Exposing impacted teeth

We will review your personal needs during your appointment.
